People love to greet one another either on special occasions or events. The greeting might be in card form or to present sweets or flowers to someone on his special day or be in form of surprise party be given to someone special. These greetings made people or loved ones closer to one another either in happiness or sorrow. This makes one realize that it is important in someone’s life. Well, the simplest way to greet someone is via greeting cards because they are easy to made and take less time irrespective of other things like organizing parties or events. 

Moreover, greeting cards can be made on MS Word because it is easy to use for either a new user or an old one. MS Word does a lot more than making reports and resumes. It has a set of graphic tools that helps you to make greeting cards. You can try this out with your kids. Well, in this article, we will let you know how to make a greeting card on MS Word. So, let’s go ahead!

Creating a Greeting Card via Microsoft Word

Before moving ahead firstly, either you want to have a flat card or folded card (like Hallmark). Greeting cards also have different sizes like A0 (84.1 x 118.9 cm) to A10 (2.6 x 3.7 cm) and shapes (like square shape, rectangular shape, so on). So, you have to make a choice of your own and then, proceed ahead.

Measures: 

You can create a greeting card with MS Word by following the simple and easy measures one by one along with reading their details. To do so, follow the simple steps given below:

1. Open a Blank Document

The first step is to open the blank document in MS Word so, follow the simple steps given below:

  1. Head to the MS Word and click the New option from the File menu 
  2. A list of templates will open up and click the Blank Document option placed on the top side of a screen

Moreover, you can use this blank page for making greeting cards on it of your own choice. Also, you can add text, shapes, photos, Word Art, or even 3D models. 

2. Set Up Orientation and Layout

You have to then, set up the direction and design of the greeting card. But, you first have to set the landscape mode because it works well with the images and greeting cards are always set in landscape mode too. To do so, follow the simple steps mentioned below:

  1. Launch the MS word app and then, select the Layout option placed next to the Design option on the top. 
  2. Now, select the Page Setup Group placed on the left side then, select the Orientation option from the given options 
  3. Finally, select the Landscape option from the list that appears. 

Now, you are required to change the size so, for this follow the simple steps:

  1. Go back to the Page Setup Group placed on the top left side of a screen
  2. Now, click the Size option placed next to the orientation option to choose the suitable size from the dropdown menu. Also, you can use the custom size by selecting the More Paper Sizes option placed at the bottom of the dropdown menu.

Note: You can change the margins of the greeting card by following the simple path: Page Setup Group >  Size > More Paper Sizes > Page Setup > Margins (i.e., to reduce the margins if you want the image to cover the paper).

3. Balance Everything with Gridlines

Another step is to balance the card’s appearance via gridlines to make it look more appealing. The white space in the boxes helps to balance the text or shape with graphics. You can enable the gridlines and alignment directions to align the objects on the document with accuracy. These gridlines are not printed. Also, you can decide not to use gridlines and instead align everything to keep in balance with your eyesight. Well, to do so, follow the simple steps:

  1. Launch the MS word app and then, select the View option placed next to the Review option on the top. 
  2. Choose the Gridline option from the available options and now, select your design placed in the document.
  3. Head to the Format tab placed on the right side of the ribbon. For a selected shape, the tab will read as Shape Format option. 
  4. Now, select the Layout option placed next to the Design option on the top then, select the Align option placed at the top right side
  5. Select the Grid Settings option from the options that appear (i.e., to enable the Snap-to feature, display alignment guides, and change the distance between grid lines).

4. Divide Your Page for the Fold

You can also fold the greeting card that divides the page in half. There are a number of ways to do this in MS Word. Well, we will use the line shape and place it in the center of the page. To do so, follow the simple steps given below:

  1. Launch the MS word app and then, select the Insert option placed next to the Home option on the top
  2. Select the Shape option then, choose the Line from the options that appears
  3. Now, press the Shift key of a keyboard and draw a vertical line across the middle of the page. 
  4. Clicking this vertical line there appears the Layout Options icon which tries to keep this line in the middle of the page and click it. 
  5. To keep it in the middle select the Fix position on page option and then, select the See more option placed under it. 
  6. There appears another Layout settings menu then, fix the position of a line shape by setting the Horizontal and Vertical alignments. 

5. Start Adding Your Graphics

You can now, add graphics that make your greeting card look more appealing and you add your photos on it too. Also, MS Word can also supply stock images but it is considered that you should choose your own photo’s choice. Well, To do so, follow the simple steps given below:

  1. Launch the MS word app and then, select the Insert option placed next to the Home option on the top
  2. Select the Picture option to insert a picture in a document 
  3. Choose the Design option placed next to the Draw option on the top and then, select the Page Color option placed on the top right side 
  4. Select the Fill Effects option place at the bottom of the page color menu that appears (i.e., to fill up the whole page with a picture if you set it as the background)

However, the Picture tab allows using your own photo or any Creative Commons image source with a Bing Search as a picture fill for a page. Also, you see the preview before inserting it into a document.

6. Choose Beautiful Fonts

The greeting card without being decorated and having no text on it seems useless. So, after selecting the picture now, you have to work on the text and other content. Well, to do so, follow the simple steps given below: 

  1. Launch the MS word app and then, select the Insert option placed next to the Home option on the top
  2. Select the Text box to write a text placed on the top right side of a document or choose the ‘A’ icon (or insert WordArt) to select the word as it has several Word Art Styles available in it, which gives style to the text. Alternatively, if you have to choose the plain text then, you have to work with Shape Fill, Shape Outline, and Shape Effects.

Moreover, Text Box in MS Word has advanced formatting in it.

  1. You can begin with a nice-looking font, choose the correct font size, and give it a proper font color.
  2. The next step is to choose the Text Box, right-click on the text box to open the context menu.
  3. From there you can select Format Shape that will display a sidebar along with all the Shape and Text Options.
  4. Well, text options have further three categories like Text Fill & Outline, Text Effects, and Layout & Properties.

Furthermore, you can decorate the text by playing with the fills, gradients, and transparency. The decorative combination entirely depends on a picture that plays a role as a background. 

7. Preview and Print

Once the design is ready, all you need is to print it. Make sure to set the right paper size and orientation before your print. Then open the final design in your desired printing app and initiate the print.

The color print will take more time, but you should color print your card as greetings cards always look good in colors. But if you want to save your ink, you can print in greyscale, which is faster than color printing.
