People love to use the shortcut keys while working on a laptop or a PC. There are many keys for some browsers but most of them are the same. When doing some kind of work, more than one tab opens at once in a browser. Sometimes it is easier to use the keyboard if we are doing typing and also, need some information for a number of tabs in a browser. Also, keyboard shortcuts allow you to surf the web in a more efficient and fastest way. Well, with shortcuts in the browser there are a number of things to do like change screen or font size, re-open closed tabs, scroll via pages automatically, & so on. 

However, jumping from one tab to another via PC’s trackpad or mouse, making use of keyboard shortcuts work faster. In the upcoming section, we will let you know how to switch between tabs in a browser via keyboard. Also, we have highlighted some of the tabs for a well-known number of browsers – Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Brave.

Tab Shortcuts of Chrome and Microsoft Edge Browsers

Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers share a number of resemblances and both have a similar Chromium engine. Though, Edge has more advanced features than Chrome. Well, the below-mentioned shortcuts should be the same for both browsers.

Switch to the Next Tab

For Windows, ChromeOS, Linux, Chromebooks:

  • Press Ctrl + Tab or Ctrl + Pg Dn (page down) to switch to the next tab

For macOS powered computers:

  • Press Command + Option + Right arrow to shift to the next tab 

Switch to a Previous Tab

For Windows or Linux:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Tab (or Ctrl + Page Up) to shift to the previous tab 

For macOS computers:

  • Press Command + Option + Left arrow button to shift to the previous tab 

Switch to a Specific Tab

For Windows or Linux:

  • Press Ctrl + Tab number to shift to the specific tab {e.g., pressing Ctrl + 1 will take you to the first tab and so on till ninth tab (Ctrl + 9) and Ctrl + 0 means nothing}

For MacBook or iMac:

  • Press Command + 1 to open the first tab and so on till the ninth tab (Command + 9) in a row

Tab Shortcuts of Firefox Browser

Firebox tab’s navigation interface is a bit fancy which allows you to preview the pages of a web when you switch the tabs via keyboard shortcuts.

Switch Forward Between Tabs

For Mac, Linux, Windows:

  • Press Ctrl + Tab to shift to the next tab (left to right). Well, hold Ctrl and keep pressing Tab automatically takes you to the next tab and so on.

Switch to Previous Tabs

For Windows, Linux:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Tab (or Ctrl + Page Down) to shift to the previous tab (right to left)

For Mac:

  • Press Command + Option + Left arrow button (or Control + Shift + Tab) to shift to the previous tab

Switch to a Specific Tab

For Linux:

  • Press Alt + 1 to Alt + 8 to shift to the specific tabs 

For Windows:

  • Press Control + 1 to Control + 8 to shift to the specific tabs 

For Mac:

  • Press Command + 1 to Command + 8 to shift to the specific tabs 

Well, to jump to the last tab on Firefox’s Tab Bar; 

For Linux:

  • Press Alt + 9 

For Windows: 

  • Press Control + 9

For Mac:

  • Press Command + 9 

Tab Shortcuts of Safari Browser

If you use Safari for web search then, these shortcut keys will help you reach the tabs easily. Also, it reduces the time you spend searching between the tabs. 

Switch to the Next Tab

  • Press Control + Tab {or press Shift + Command + Right Squared bracket ( ] )} to shift to the next tab 

Switch to a Previous Tab

  • Press Command + Shift + Tab {or press Shift + Command + Left Squared bracket ( [ )} to shift to the previous tab

Switch to a Specific Tab

  • Press Command + 1 to open the first tab and so on till the ninth tab (Command + 9) on a row 
  • Moreover, you can head to Safari’s preferences menu to activate the tab switch option. Simply, open Safari > click Apple Logo > select preferences > then, select Tabs > hence, tick the check box “Use ⌘-1 to ⌘-9 to switch tabs”.

Tab Shortcuts of Opera Browser 

Opera uses shortcuts for forward and backward via open windows and tabs. Well, this browser lacks shortcuts regarding switching to a specific tab.

Switch Between Opera Tabs

For Linux, Windows, macOS:

  • Press Ctrl + Tab to switch to the next tab (left to right)
  • Press Shift + Ctrl + Tab to shift to the backward (right to left)

Switch Between Opera Windows

For Windows, Linux:

  • Press Alt + Tab to switch through windows 

For Mac:

  • Press Command + Backquote ( ` ) to switch between windows 

Advanced Tab Navigation Shortcuts on Opera

To have advanced keyboard shortcuts simply, open Opera’s settings menu > go to Advanced > then, Browser > click Shortcuts > then, select Enable advanced keyboard shortcuts.

For Windows, Linux, Mac:

  • Press 1 to cycle forward through open tabs
  • Press 2  to cycle backward through open tabs 

For Mac only: 

  • Press Control + Backquote ( ` ) to switch between the current and previous tab

Tab Shortcuts of Brave Browser

Brave browser is considered faster and more safe than Chrome and Firefox. Well, the below-mentioned shortcuts will help you to improve tab navigation speed efficiently. 

Switch to the Next Tab

For macOS:

  • Press Command + Option + Right arrow key to shift to the next tab to the right

For Linux, Windows:

  • Press Control + Tab (or press Control + Page Down) to shift to the next tab

Switch to the Previous Tab

For Windows, Linux: 

  • Press Control + Shift + Tab (or press Control + Page Up) to shift to previous tab

For Mac:

  • Press Command + Option + Left arrow key to shift to the previous tab

Switch to a Specific Tab on Brave

For macOS:

  • Press Command + 1 to open the first tab and so on till the ninth tabs (Command + 9) in a row

For Windows, Linux:

  • Press Control + 1 to open the first tab and so on till the ninth tabs (Control + 9) in a row

Time to Switch Tabs with more Speed

Despite using a mouse is still a big convenience, if you are typing or chatting, moving your hand to grab the mouse is not a good option.
